A ten-year-old boy injured in a road accident at the weekend is today still in a critical condition in hospital.
Police, who had initially appealed for help in identifying the boy, traced his parents on Sunday and they spent all day by his bedside in Newcastle General Hospital today.
The boy, who had only just turned ten, suffered head injuries, a broken hip and internal injuries, following the accident in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, on Sunday morning.
The incident happened in Burn Lane at about 10.30am. It appears that the boy, who has not been named, had been cycling on the footpath at Burn Lane.
It was when left the footpath to cross the road near the junction with Cobblers Hall that he collided with a Fiat Punto, being driven by a man in his late 50s from West Durham.
The boy was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Newcastle General where hospital staff described his condition as critical.
