A support group has been formed to persuade mothers to breastfeed their babies.
The group was opened at the Bearpark Community Centre, near Durham, by the Brandon and Deerness Valley Sure Start Programme. Weekly meetings provide mothers with the chance to relax and chat.
Margaret Walker, breastfeeding support worker, said: "We hope it will encourage and support mums to continue breastfeeding for as long as they possibly can."
Tricia Cresswell, of Durham and Chester-le-Street Primary Care Trust, said: "Breastfeeding is best for both mums and babies. It helps bonding, provides the best nutrition for babies and helps mums to lose weight. It can also have long-term health benefits. Evidence now shows that babies who are breastfed for longer periods - six months or so - are less likely to be overweight children.''
