A BAND has become the first from England to carry off top honours in a north-of-the-border contest.
Easington Colliery Brass Band won first place in Scotland's Carnegie Hall Invitational Competition.
The musicians have struggled for survival since the closure of their village pit, which saw the group lose its vital funding.
But with a determination to succeed and the appointment of musical director Stuart Gray, the band has not only survived its cash crisis but has gone on to notch up several competition successes.
The band has also managed to recruit several players into its ranks, which has helped the ensemble go from strength to strength culminating in their fine Scottish achievement.
An opportunity for residents to hear the trophy winning band will come on June 7 when it will give a concert at Easington Colliery Methodist Church.
Two further performances are arranged during Easington's Music Festival, in October.
