FIVE mechanics have raised £1,000 for charity by making their way across Europe in an old banger.
Phil Sutton, from Peterlee, Wayne Moores, from Spennymoor, Tony Sirmond, from Fishburn, Darren Charlton, from Toft Hill, and Anthony Swainston, from Catterick, travelled through nine countries in a 12-year-old Mitsubishi Galant, which cost £100.
The men, who all work for the AA's breakdown service, completed the challenge through Belgium, Switzerland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Holland, Germany and Austria in five days, raising the money for Cancer Research.
Mr Swainston, 42, said: "We all worked on the car and it went like a dream, despite being pretty old. We didn't get to see a lot of the countryside, although driving through the Alps was amazing."
