AN abandoned Jack Russell terrier has proved popular with dog lovers since an appeal to help him was launched a year ago.
Four-year-old Kenco, a permanent fixture at the Dogs Trust Centre, in Sadberge, near Darlington, cannot be re-homed because he becomes too possessive with people.
A year ago the centre appealed for sponsors to provide him with food, bedding and veterinary care - and since then, more than 5,000 people have obliged.
The money raised goes towards caring for all the dogs at the centre.
Sarah Shreeve, from the Dogs Trust, said: "He absolutely loves it here and has a whale of a time.
"He gets too attached to people and he can get very possessive and a bit nippy.
"He's better with a large group situation and is often behind the reception desk.
"On an average week he has a visit from a sponsor six days out of the seven."
Sponsors, who are asked to pay £1 a week, can visit Kenco and also receive regular newsletters, a lapel pin and a certificate.
