A POLICEMAN was dragged through city streets at up to 60mph as he tried to arrest a suspect
PC Neville King feared for his life as he desperately clung to the car as it careered through York yesterday morning.
But he still had the presence of mind to knock the vehicle out of gear, bringing it to a stop so he could arrest the young male driver and handcuff him to the steering wheel.
The incident began at about 9.45am yesterday when PC King spotted the car in Foss Islands Road and followed it in an unmarked car.
When the suspect Vauxhall Cavalier car stopped in East Parade, the officer approached the car to arrest the driver.
PC King said: "I ran to the driver's door to try to get the car keys. I told him he was under arrest for driving while disqualified and at that point he drove off with the door open and me inside.
"I don't know what route we took, but we ended up in Heworth Road. He was going from side to side, trying to shake me out. It felt like a lifetime.
"I saw that we hit 60mph and the car was accelerating. I kept telling him to stop the car or he might kill me and get done for murder."
He suffered leg injuries during the incident.
Witnesses have been asked to call (01904) 669884 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
