EURO MP Stephen Hughes was shown around an 86-acre site being transformed into a business park yesterday.
Councillor David Lyonette, Darlington Borough Council's cabinet member for regeneration, showed Mr Hughes the work under way to create the Faverdale East Business Park in the town.
Hall Construction began work in April to develop the first phase of the park.
More than £500,000 of European Regional Development Fund money has recently been allocated to the work.
Mr Hughes said: "I am delighted to be able to see how European money for regional development is making a difference to the people in Darlington and South Durham.
"The employment opportunities available during the construction phase and then later when firms like Argos and others are attracted will be a boost to the local and regional economy."
Argos is seeking planning permission for a warehouse which would create 700 jobs.
The development is part of the Darlington Gateway strategy, designed to attract business and jobs to the town.
