CHILDHOOD sweethearts who grew up next door to each other celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Joseph and Joan Scott, of Neasham Road, Darlington, both say the last 60 years have been full of happy memories.
The couple, both 82, met when they were five, and were neighbours in Pease Street, Darlington.
They courted as teenagers and married at Greenbank Church in Bondgate, on May 17, 1944.
Mr Scott said: "The past 60 years have been good fun with lots of love and laughter. She is my soulmate."
Mr Scott served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Afterwards he worked in both France and Malaya.
Mrs Scott travelled with him before they returned to Darlington and had four children, Trevor, 55, Ian, 52, Jeanette, 45 and Stephanie, 35. The couple now also have six grandchildren.
Mrs Scott said: "The years have gone so quickly. We have had a lot of happy times. We are very lucky to have a family that is so caring."
