SIR Jimmy Savile fixed it for himself when he fulfilled a childhood dream on a trip to the North-East coast.
The 77-year-old charity champion and television personality took a trip on the Tyne and Wear Metro yesterday, on its coastal loop from Newcastle to the North Sea.
In his early twenties, in the post-war period, Sir Jimmy made regular trips from his native Leeds to visit family members in Monkseaton, North Tyneside, which was then a station on the old North-East Railway line.
Sir Jimmy said: "They were very happy times and I absolutely loved Monkseaton and the coast, but I never got a chance to go round the coast on a train.
"I always promised myself that one day I would treat myself to the trip and that's what I'm doing today."
Sir Jimmy received a free travel pass from Mike Parker, director general of Metro operator, Nexus.
He presented the Nexus employee of the month award to Central Metro Station Travelshop worker, Ian Chapman.
