More than 80 charities will share £33,540 this year from the Darlington Mayor's Charitable Trust.
Mayor Ron Lewis presented the proceeds of his charity fund to worthy causes in the town yesterday.
Much of the money has been raised through the Mayor's Charity Shop.
Since the shop opened 30 years ago, it has raised more than £500,000 selling a wide range of second-hand goods.
This year, Councillor Lewis has chosen the Darlington and District Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society and the Darlington Young Sportswinner Scheme as his nominated good causes, but a number of donations have already been made to other charities.
Yesterday, the mayor presented £12,000 to the Darlington and District MS Society, £5,000 to the Darlington Young Sportswinner Scheme, and £1,000 to the town's St Teresa's Hospice.
The Cockerton Prize Silver Band and Darlington District Talking Newspaper each received £500 from the charity fund.
