FORMER Health Secretary Alan Milburn yesterday lent his support to a campaign to tackle a national shortage of foster carers.
The Darlington MP met carers and social workers in the town's Arts Centre as he gave his backing to Foster Care Fortnight.
Mr Milburn cut a celebratory cake at a coffee morning that was open to people working in the sector and potential recruits.
The initiative is the Fostering Network's annual awareness and recruitment campaign.
Organisers said there was a serious shortage of carers in the UK, causing instability and disruption to the lives of many youngsters.
