TWO North-East museums have won national awards.
Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens has been awarded a commendation in the Museums and Heritage Awards for Excellence 2004.
The attraction won the accolade for its Home Comforts outreach project that involved women from a refugee and asylum seekers' drop-in centre in Sunderland.
The group worked with an artist and museum staff to create an exhibition of textiles that was shown in the museum's community gall-ery.
The Hancock Museum, in Newcastle, has also won national recognition. Its Den area won two commendations at the Interpret Britain and Ireland Awards.
The Den is an activity area designed for young children to learn about the natural world through investigative play. It was selected for the way it informs and involves the public.
Alec Coles, director of Tyne and Wear Museums, which operates both sites, said: "It is wonderful that Tyne and Wear Museums has been commended for its pioneering work in making museums more accessible for everyone.
"Both the award-winning projects were tailored specifically for groups which are traditionally overlooked by museums."
