PEOPLE over 50 were able to log on to the Internet for the first time at a silver surfers' event held for beginners.
The Shildon Project for the Initiation of Community Enterprise (Spice) invited people over 50 to use the computers at it community access point and enterprise centre yesterday.
The idea behind the event was to encourage older people who may never have used a computer before to go along to the Church Street venue and give it a try.
One was 79-year-old Ivy Robson, who celebrates her 80th birthday soon.
She said she had never bothered with computers but thought she would attend the silver surfers' day to try out the Internet.
She said: "I once tried having a go on the computer at my son's house, but I gave up. I don't know whether I will be able to do this or not, but I thought I would come along and try.''
