INDUSTRIAL plant-builder VAI UK announced last night that it won a record number of orders last year.

The Stockton company, which builds engineering and metallurgy plants, saw a number of major orders during the past year, including contracts for steelmaker Corus in Port Talbot, Handan Iron and Steel Group, in China, and contracts for a number of aluminium mills.

Directors said the past year had seen good performance from the iron and steel, and automation divisions, while a new subsidiary company, Shapetech, had demonstrated encouraging growth.

Managing director of VAI UK Roy Tazzyman said VAI had continued to enhance Stockton's reputation as a leader in steelmaking technology.

Karl Gruber, board member of Austrian parent company VAI, highlighted an encouraging performance during the past year, as well as outlining the future on maintaining the company's strong global position.

He highlighted a number of successes, including positive results across all business areas.

Against the backdrop of strong steel growth globally - particularly in China, the Middle East and Brazil - VAI achieved a record order intake worth 1,152 million euros.

"The future is always uncertain, it is difficult to predict, but the market is improving," said Mr Tazzyman.

"It is important for us to deliver what we promise.

"The reputation of our company depends on what we deliver."

Mr Tazzyman paid tribute to the Stockton team's expertise in iron and steel, in particular citing the success of the Corus blast furnace at Port Talbot, as having secured VAI's position.

He said: "The expertise of the team has enabled us to make new achievements and further our reputation for excellence around the world - be very proud of your success here."

VAI UK employs about 450 permanent staff at its three main UK operational centres.
