A TEENAGE student has become the first beneficiary of an annual travel bursary set up in memory of a murdered backpacker.
Caroline Stuttle was killed in Australia two years ago during her gap year after she finished her A-levels at Huntington School, near York. She was 19.
Her father, Alan, a professional artist, set up the bursary to encourage other students at the school to "live her dream" and encourage their artistic talent through travel.
The bursary of £500 has been awarded for the first time to student Jane Bradley, who will use the money to help finance a trip to the US.
She plans to travel to New York to view works of art and then produce a piece herself, which will go in the school.
Mr Stuttle said that giving the bursary helped him draw a line under his daughter's death.
He said: "It is a wonderful opportunity and a great joy to be able to give them some money to help them move on in their careers.
"It is not a lot of money, but it is something they can use to help them do what they want."
The bursary has been awarded after students submitted bids and said what they would spend the money on.
