A SCHOOLBOY has been arrested by police investigating a spate of walk in burglaries.

The 14-year-old, who had allegedly been knocking on doors at Guisborough, east Cleveland, and offering to do odd jobs for payment, was followed by a 68-year-old victim who then called Cleveland Police.

Detective Constable Peter Clifford is worried that some thefts involving children may have gone unreported.

He said: "Reports indicate that the problem has moved from the Guisborough town area to residential estates.

"We want people to be aware and on their guard if young people call offering to do jobs. They should be careful.''

He said: "Due to the age and vulnerability of some pensioners they are reluctant to report incidents either to the police, the housing provider or close relatives and friends.''

Two youths are known to have been involved in deceptions when small amounts of cash have been stolen.

Det Con Clifford said: "It is vital we get information that enables us to identify those responsible and prevent further distress being caused to our senior citizens.''

People with concerns about ringing the police can call neighbourhood watch liaison officer Joyce Oakden on (01642) 302099. Crimestoppers can also be called on 0800 555 111.
