A CLUB for scooter enthusiasts in the region is gearing up for a recruitment drive.

Riding Vespas and Lambrettas was popularised in the 1960s, but more young people are choosing scooters as their preferred mode of transport.

Such riders are being targeted by County Durham Scooter Club, which is encouraging riders to join them on weekend rallies.

On Saturday, 60 scooter lovers will make an 80-mile trip to Kelso, in the Scottish Borders.

Club member Steve Craggs, of New Brancepeth, near Durham, said: "It is such a big scene nowadays that it is as popular as it was in the sixties and seventies.

"I was around the first time, but now all the kids are getting mod gear because it is fashionable and trendy. It is making a come- back in a big way and it is great fun."

The club meets with other scooter clubs in the North-East, such as the Newcastle Vesparados, the Odd Mod Squad from Sunderland, and the Middlesbrough Transporters.

Mr Craggs said: "The thing about the scooter is you can be stressed in the evening when you come in from work but go out for a ride and you can chill out."

County Durham Scooter Club has meetings at 7pm on Thursdays at The Salutation, Framwellgate Moor, Durham.

As well as enjoying day trips and evening riding, members take part in social evenings and hold fundraising events for local charities.
