A "mad half-hour" on Sunday has piled the pressure on Yorkshire ahead of today's Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy third round match against Devon at Exmouth, said director of cricket, David Byas, writes David Warner.
He was referring to the two suicidal run-outs and some sloppy dismissals which cost Yorkshire their totesport League game with Worcestershire at Headingley after they had been charging along at 65 without loss in reply to their opponents 238 for six.
A win on Sunday would have boosted confidence but the upset will have helped to convince Minor Counties' outfit Devon that they can now dispose of Yorkshire just as they did Leicestershire in the previous round.
"It was very upsetting the way we destroyed ourselves after our junior attack had done a terrific job in the Worcestershire innings," said Byas. "We were given a great start by Craig White and Matthew Wood but by the 18th over the game had slipped away from us on the back of stupidity and sloppy cricket."
Yorkshire were able to take some consolation from knowing that they have managed to beat Devon on all three previous occasions they have been at Exmouth in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy - and the last time they were there two years' ago they went on to overpower Somerset in the final at Lord's.
Matthew Hoggard returns from the thrilling Lord's Test match to strengthen Yorkshire's attack but it will be the last game he plays for them in quite a while. England have barred him from playing against Scotland in Edinburgh on Monday when, instead, he will be joining up with the Test squad at Headingley ahead of the second Test next Thursday.
The good news for Yorkshire is that England captain Michael Vaughan is all set to play for them in Edinburgh to see if he has fully recovered from the knee injury which kept him out at Lord's.
"I have spoken to Michael and he is keen to play unless there is some last minute hitch with his progress," said Byas. Paceman John Blain will be out for up to three weeks with his calf tear.
