A SERIES of free walks exploring the north Durham countryside starts today.
The Walk Well programme, run by the Northumbria area of the Ramblers' Association, aims to introduce people to the joys of walking through a series of short strolls.
Organiser Terry Pollard said: "People are becoming increasingly aware that they are not taking enough exercise in their daily lives.
"We hope that the Walk Well initiative will provide the springboard to greater levels of exercise for many people."
The first walk, of four miles, is tonight at 7pm, around Whickham, in Gateshead, starting from the corner of Coniston Avenue and Whickham Highway.
On Thursday, June 3, a walk of four miles starts from the Moorhouse lay-by on the A690 near Durham City.
The first family walk, of three miles, takes place on Sunday, June 6, in Thornley Woodlands Centre, Rowlands Gill, Gateshead. Meet at 11am and bring a picnic.
Mr Pollard said anyone interested in any of the walks can just turn up and join in.
No specialist hiking equipment is needed, but walkers are advised to wear suitable footwear and bring some waterproof clothing.
