FORMER Vodafone boss Sir Christopher Gent was yesterday named by drugs group GlaxoSmithKline as the successor to chairman Sir Christopher Hogg.
The 56-year-old will join the board of the Anglo-US group as deputy chairman on Tuesday, before stepping up to the top post at the start of next year.
Sir Christopher, who was linked to the vacant post at the helm of Marks & Spencer, will earn £400,000 and £100,000 in shares each year for his part-time role. He will work alongside chief executive Dr Jean-Pierre Garnier.
GSK expressed delight at the appointment of the man who turned Vodafone from a start-up in the 1980s to the world's biggest mobile phone company.
"He brings with him many years of experience and a track record of delivering outstanding performance in a highly competitive global industry," said Sir Christopher Hogg, who will retire on New Year's Eve.
