MARSEILLE'S Egyptian forward Mido claims Newcastle are among a clutch of big-name clubs keen to kickstart his career.
The 21-year-old from Cairo, who previously played for Spanish side Celta Vigo, is surplus to requirements at the Stade Velodrome after an injury-plagued season in which he hardly figured.
Mido, real name Ahmed Hossam, declared: "Roma, Atletico Madrid, Newcastle and Besiktas have all asked for information about me.''
Mido missed both legs when Marseille beat the Magpies in their UEFA Cup semi-final decider three weeks ago.
Newcastle have already turned down the chance to sign centre-back Abdoulaye Meite as Marseille hawk players around following their UEFA final defeat by Valencia.
But striker Steve Marlet, who faced Newcastle in the second leg of the semi-final, is hoping to win a permanent move to Marseille from Fulham after a successful season's loan.
Marseille would prefer to renew his loan, but Marlet said: "I really hope to remain there next season. There is just a detail to settle. I am much more interested in a transfer than a loan.''
* Portsmouth have signed defender Andy Griffin from Newcastle.
The 25-year-old full-back has signed a four-year contract at Fratton Park after joining on a Bosman transfer.
Griffin is Pompey's first signing of the close season after they retained their Premiership status following a fabulous end to the campaign.
