WARTIME ration books, recipes and plans of air raid shelters will be available to view in June.
People in Darlington will be able to look up military records of their families using library resources as part of Local Studies Month and the BBC People's War project.
Next month, the Darlington Centre for Local Studies, in the town's Crown Street Library, will be holding war and military themed events, starting on June 11 with a military walk around Darlington in the company of local historian and author George Flynn. It will start at 2.15pm at the corner of Larchfield Street and Coniscliffe Road, and finish at the Bradford Armoury, in Neasham Road. The cost is £1, payable on the day.
On Monday, June 14, local author and military historian Bob Jackson will be giving a talk on the secret weapons of the Second World War in the library beginning at 2pm. This is a free event and refreshments will be provided.
On Wednesday, June 16, there will be an open afternoon in the local studies centre from 2pm to 5pm, when visitors can find out about local war history, and view old documents including ration books, recipes using dried egg and maps of where air raid shelters were in the town.
People will also be able to search for the military records of their ancestors using resources in the library and on the Internet. People are also being encouraged to record personal wartime experiences for future generations. Staff will be available to offer advice and assistance.
