THE first round of a grant scheme saw £1,000 given to good causes. A total of £800 was allocated to organisations and £200 to talented individuals by the Starbeck Community Fund.
Harrogate Boxing Club, at Provincial Works, Starbeck, received £400 to go towards sparring gloves and headguards.
Starbeck in Bloom received £400 which will go towards the fitting and planting of floral baskets to brighten up the High Street.
Two young musicians were awarded £100 each. They were David Price, 17, who plays trombone and drums in three bands and four orchestras, and Rachel Atkins, 21, who is studying music at the University of Birmingham. She plays the lead flute in the university's philharmonic and symphony orchestras and is an organist for the Starbeck Methodist Church when she is home from college.
* The development of the former Octavius Atkinson site, by Taylor Woodrow, led to the provision of a £300,000 gift for the purpose of creation or improvement of recreation and community facilities in Starbeck. Part of the interest on the lump sum is paid into the grant scheme, which makes awards twice a year.
