Cleveland County
Despite television coverage the game of bowls is not always accepted as a game where young people can excel and play at a high representative level but Cleveland County's recent under-25 match against national honours contenders, Derbyshire, proved they can.
At Elm Tree bowling club, Stockton, the team won on three out of four rinks taking the overall score to Cleveland 113 Derbyshire 105. Top rink on the day was Shaun Morgan, David Blackburn and Mark Harris with a 36-25 win, but special mention must go to ten-year-old Joshua Shaw whose rink achieved a last gasp 24-23 win. Joshua, who is a protg of the Thornaby indoor youth scheme which has already produced national and world winners, was playing in only his second outdoor game and showed tremendous grit against much older opponents. The final points score was Cleveland 12 Derbyshire 2.
After last week's stunning match against Durham, the senior team struggled against a strong Humberside team. The Adams team lost on all rinks but the Newton team salvaged eight points by winning on 4 out of 6 rinks. Top rink Geoff Roberts, Jackie Place and Derek Hunter won 33 -20 but this was not quite enough to win the overall match so the score was Cleveland 8 points, Humberside 14.
