BOOKWORM Kimberley Stephenson is helping her school in its attempt to unlock tens of thousands of pounds in funding.
Kimberley, 13, a pupil at Moorside Community College, in Consett, aims to read all 100 of the UK's most popular books by the end of this school term.
Her sponsored Big Read is to bring in funds as the school attempts to gain specialist technology status.
The college needs to raise £45,000 as part of its bid. If it is successful, along with specialist status will come a one-off payment of about £150,000, plus extra funding for the next four academic years.
Kimberley said: "When I heard our headteacher talk about what Moorside would be like if we became a technology college, I really wanted to help.
"I love reading and I'm confident that I'll reach 100 books by the end of term.
"So far, I've read 26 books and attracted lots of sponsors, but I want more."
Moorside's head of English, Mary Hannon, said: "I think it's a great idea.
"Not only is this for an excellent cause, but Kimberley is encountering some classic writers, like Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, for the first time."
Headteacher Jonathan Morris said: "This really will transform things if we get the money. It would mean we could seriously invest in resources."
The status brings with it added responsibility, including outreach work to local schools and providing Information Technology facilities to community groups for adult learning.
The college launched a fundraising drive in February, boosted by a £5,000 grant from Moorside Community Association.
Students have also carried out bag packing at the Safeway store in Consett and two teachers are undertaking a sponsored, coast-to-coast bike ride.
"The money is slowly adding up," said Mr Morris. "The kids have been fantastic with their fundraising ideas, but Kimberley's idea is the most novel so far."
Along with raising the cash, the college must submit a plan for a new curriculum and a blueprint for community education.
Its final bid will be submitted in mid-October.
