A bus is to be used to help get youngsters away from crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Youth Inclusion Project's (YIP) mobile bus, to be launched on Tuesday, will provide positive activities for youngsters living or spending time in local crime hot spots in east Cleveland.

Young people have stripped, cleaned, designed, painted and furnished the vehicle, inherited by the YIP at the beginning of the year.

The bus now has mixing decks, an IT booth, health area, film-making suite and a comfortable self-contained chill-out zone.

Every area on the bus has been drawn up in consultation with young people from a range of different projects from the youth offending service, so they have had a full say in the activities that interest them.

Lorraine McConnell, manager of Redcar and Cleveland YIP, said: "The project has really given the young people a chance to develop their skills.

"They've not only had a say in what's gone into it, but they have also contributed to making the project work. They have developed carpentry skills, learned about electrics and studied design."

Rod Morgan, who will launch the project, said he had no doubt that the bus would appeal to all young people.
