FORMER England rugby star Tony Underwood has opened a nine-hole golf course in the region.

The £300,000 course at Headlam Hall Hotel, near Gainford, County Durham, has taken a year to build and is the first course to open in Teesdale in more than 100 years.

The course is open to the public on Tuesday but saw action for the first time yesterday when a match in aid of the Make A Child Smile charity was held after Underwood's teeing off ceremony.

The course was been designed by Ralph Givens, professional at Stressholme Golf Course and former professional at Blackwell course, both in Darlington, and features a ten-bay driving range, changing rooms and a professional shop.

Hole lengths range from a short 100 yard par three over a pond to a testing 260-yard dog-leg.
