A man is fighting for his life after he was attacked in a late-night assault.
The 38-year-old, from Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear, was attacked as he made his way down Front Street in the nearby village of Fencehouses.
He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition yesterday was described as critical but stable.
The attack happened at around midnight on Saturday (MAY 29). Four people were arrested over the weekend. One was released on police bail pending further enquiries. Police said no further action would be taken against the other three.
Detectives believe there were several witnesses in nearby fast food takeaway outlets and are keen to speak to anyone who saw the attack. Anyone with information should contact 0191-454 7555, extension 66426.
