TOURIST attractions in the region reported an increase in the number of visitors during the bank holiday weekend.
Staff at Britain's oldest floating warship, HMS Trincomalee, built in 1817 at Hartlepool, reported a 17 per cent increase on the same weekend last year.
Managers at Beamish Museum, near Stanley, County Durham, also said visitor numbers were high, although no statistics were available.
The One NorthEast Tourism team said initial results from calls to a number of tourist attractions and accommodation providers indicated it had been a healthy weekend for tourism.
Val Lowther, of One NorthEast, said there were also reports of tourists from Australia, the US and Germany visiting the region.
