A MAN was in a critical condition in hospital last night after he was attacked at a North-East caravan park over the weekend.

The 38-year-old, from Washington, Wearside, became involved in a dispute at Witton Castle Caravan Park, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, at about midnight on Sunday.

He was staying at the park with his wife and two children.

It is believed his wife was assaulted but not seriously hurt, and when he intervened he was set upon by several visitors also staying there.

He was hit about the head and body with makeshift weapons, including broom handles and table legs.

He suffered serious head injuries and remains in a critical but stable condition in Darlington Memorial Hospital.

Detective Inspector Alan Veitch, of Bishop Auckland CID, said: "This man was subjected to a sustained and violent attack. We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen what happened or who may know the names of those responsible."

Det Insp Veitch can be contacted on (01325) 742302 or witnesses can ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
