A MAN was fighting for his life last night following an attack in the street.
The 38-year-old, from Houghton-le-Spring, Wearside, was assaulted as he walked along Front Street, in nearby Fencehouses, at about midnight on Saturday.
He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition was last night described as critical but stable.
Four people were arrested over the weekend. One was released on police bail pending further inquiries. Police said no further action would be taken against the other three.
Detectives believe there were several witnesses in nearby fast-food takeaway outlets. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives on 0191-454 7555.
