CHILDREN swapped disco dancing for the rhythms of Africa yesterday.
Primary school pupils performed African-influenced dance routines they had devised at Hartlepool Art Gallery.
Parents watched as the nine and ten-year-olds danced in the gallery's main exhibition hall which is displaying 6ft portrait paintings.
Members of the Sakoba Dance Theatre group Bode Lawal and Marie Lawrence had worked with the children of Grange and Lynnfield primary schools, in Hartlepool, for three days before the performance.
Musicians Zozo and Same, and Pauline Mayers, from the teesdanceinitiative, also participated in the workshops.
A spokesman for the Sakoba Dance Theatre said: "The children have explored the themes of travel and culture through dance, theatre and music and yesterday have had the opportunity to show family and friends the work they have created in the art gallery."
The African dance company have held similar workshops in Middlesbrough and Stockton.
