THE public are getting a chance to have their say on one of the trains of the future.
In two years time, the Desiro will be a commonplace sight on the TransPennine routes across the region.
But an early look is possible after the unveiling of a full-scale 23-metre model at the National Railway Museum, in York, yesterday.
The model is a fully-fitted, detailed example of how the new trains will appear once they enter service in 2006 and visitors can climb aboard and try the seats.
TransPennine Express has ordered 51 of the Desiro diesel trains worth £250m, from German train manufacturer Siemens, to serve destinations across its network.
The 100mph trains will have air-conditioning, on-board security cameras and information systems and should provide passengers with a more frequent service between major centres, with shorter journey times, more seats and better punctuality.
TransPennine Express managing director Vernon Barker said: "These trains will be truly intercity quality and absolutely ideal for the fast, frequent, comfortable service we will be operating across the Pennines. This is a great chance for us to find out what passengers think of our plans for the future."
Visitors are being asked to answer a short questionnaire about the train and everyone can write their comments in a visitors' book.
The model is expected to be seen by tens of thousands of visitors at the railway museum during the railfest celebrations and throughout the summer holidays.
