AN appeal to buy new ambulances for County Durham's St John Ambulance has been boosted.
The Friends of Durham Hospitals handed over £5,400 to Commander Hank Doolan at a ceremony at the charity's county headquarters in Meadowfield.
The £250,000 Wheels for Life appeal was launched in October to buy four ambulances fully equipped to comply with new regulations. So far, the appeal has raised £65,000.
Friends' chairwoman Valerie Richardson said: "We are pleased and proud to be able to make this contribution towards the appeal.
"Our donation will buy the orthopaedic stretchers and respiration equipment, just some of the equipment that is needed for each new ambulance."
St John Ambulance Durham County has 650 unpaid, uniformed volunteers. Most of the current ambulance fleet is ageing and has been put to heavy use over the years. This, along with new regulations, makes the replacement a matter of urgency.
