LITTER-pickers were at nature reserves in Darlington yesterday as part of Green Week.
Darlington Borough Council staff and Tees Forest Volunteers joined forces for litter picks at Cocker Beck, Drinkfield Marsh and Brinkburn local nature reserves.
The clean-up was part of a European initiative to get towns and cities involved in Green Week, in the lead up to World Environment Day on Saturday.
The events promote direct local action and aim to make people realise small things they can do can have a big effect on improving the environment.
Local nature reserves are vital to the health and well being of Darlington's wildlife and to the many hundreds of people who visit them through the seasons.
Working with English Nature, Darlington Borough Council has three reserves, which are home to rare and endangered species, including the great crested newt and water vole.
Councillor Chris McEwan, cabinet member for community protection, said: "It is great that people have given up their time to take part in the litter pick."
