Shildon's junior athletes were in action at the North of England T & F Champs at Wigan over the bank holiday weekend, and came away with a number of excellent displays.
An outstanding performance was given by 14 year-old Khalil Thompson in the Under 15 Boys 3000m. Khalil added the North of England title to his two gold medals from the NE champs a couple of weeks ago with a superb piece of running which also smashed the championship record. Khalil's time of 9:12.37 also sends him to the top of the UK rankings this year.
Sam Stanislaus also had cause to celebrate, with a double silver medal haul. Sam finished second in the under 17 Men's High Jump, with a leap of 1.70m, then followed this up with a jump of 12.98m in the Triple Jump. Alex Snook just missed out on the medals in the U17 Ladies 1500m, finishing 5th in a time of 4.59.59, whilst Warren Roberts produced a personal best in his U17 Mens 1500m final of 4.14.89, to finish in 8th place.
Other athletes competing at the championships for the club were Natalie Owens, in the U20 Ladies 1500m final, Adam Rogers in the U20 Mens 100m, and Alex Todd in the Under 17 Men's 100m and 200m events.
Earlier in the week, the club had a number of athletes in action at the NE Athletics league at Gateshead.
Kate Avery continued her dominant form in the Under 13 Girls age group by comfortably winning the 1500m in an impressive time of 5:08.
Team mate Laura Hewitson finished in second place in a personal best time of 5:31.4. In the Under 15 Boys age group, Craig Grainger set his 7th personal best of the season in the 1500m, recording a time of 5:04.9. Abby Suffield finished 3rd in the U15 Girls 1500m, whilst Alex Snook finished 3rd in the U17 Girls 1500m despite falling during the race.
At the schools districts event at Shildon, the club had a number of athletes competing, with Alex Todd and Warren Roberts both recording comfortable victories, Natalie Cross finishing a close 2nd in the 800m, Catherine Bousfield gaining a 2nd place in the 100m and Simon Hewitson recording his best ever 800m time to finish 3rd.
