THE mayor of a small New Zealand community will arrive in the North today as part of the Transit of Venus celebrations.
Meng Foon, mayor of Gisborne, is visiting Whitby, North Yorkshire, because of Gisborne's association with Captain James Cook's Transit of Venus expedition in 1769.
Mayor Foon and a civic group from New Zealand will also visit Greenwich, Stonehenge, Oxford University, Eton College, and the Natural History Museum in London.
Mayor Foon will also visit Whitby Town Council and Scarborough Council.
