BRICKLAYER Kevin Jamison was run over twice as he lay on a country road.

But as to how he came to be lying on the carriageway of the B1269 near Dunsdale, East Cleveland, his shoes removed and left nearby, is a mystery.

Medical evidence revealed at an inquest in Middlesbrough, yesterday, that Mr Jamison had 24 separate injuries on his body. He had consumed so much alcohol that had he been driving he would have been more than three times over the legal limit.

Barred from a Guisborough pub because he was drunk, the 24-year-old had evidently decided to walk to his home in Essex Close, Redcar.

Motorist Sarah Bullock said she had to swerve to avoid Mr Jamison as he walked along the side of the road.

Another driver, Linda Carter, said she saw a body in the road and telephoned Cleveland Police when she got home. Council official Jonathan Ridley said he also swerved to avoid hitting the body.

But moments later Mr Jamison was run over by first a taxi, then a car.

Police said cab driver Ifzal Hussain of Middlesbrough, and car driver Howard Lamb of Guisborough, had driven with care, but had been unable to avoid Mr Jamison.

Assistant Deputy Teesside Coroner Anthony Eastwood recorded an open verdict.
