ENTHUSIASTS of a car built in the North-East came from around the world to take part in an anniversary rally.

Visitors from as far afield as Australia, Canada and Denmark came to Castle Howard, near Malton, North Yorkshire, for the Jowett Car Club Classic Car Rally.

This year is the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Jowett factory at Bradford, West Yorkshire, which was open from 1906 until 1954.

More than 100 cars were on display at the castle, from every era of the firm's history.

Noel Stokoe, the club's Press officer, said it had been a fantastic weekend.

He said: "We've had a really good turnout, it's been very busy and everyone's enjoyed themselves.

"This year is the 50th anniversary of the firm's closure, so I'm not sure whether we should be celebrating it or having a wake. But it does mean that every car on the road today is at least 50 years old."

The cars travelled through Hovingham on Saturday and all were driven through the ford in the village. Yesterday, the cars travelled to York.

The Jowett Car Club was formed in 1923 and is the oldest single-make car club in the world.

Jowett Jupiters won their class in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1950, 1951 and 1952, the only years they were entered.
