CYCLING and craft enthusiasts can learn the art of building a cycle wheel from start to finish when National Bicycle Week is celebrated at Hamsterley Forest this weekend.

The 5,000 acre woodland, near Bishop Auckland, will host a wheel building workshop on Sunday, 10am to noon, in association with Iron Horse Cyclery of Darlington.

Enthusiasts of all abilities can learn how to use a spoke key and construct a wheel from the basic parts of hub, rim and spokes.

The wheel-building workshop costs £10, though the fee will be waived for those buying completed wheels.

Two ride-with-a-guide outings have also been organised to promote cycling as a fun and social way of keeping fit following the popularity of a similar event last year.

Advanced riders are invited to sample the forest's toughest routes on Sunday, from 1pm, tackling downhills, tight turns and single tracks. The cost is £3.

Next Sunday, beginners can join an easier event and get to grips with better technique while exploring the stunning scenery. It starts at 1pm and costs £2.

Booking is required for all the events on (01388) 488312 and helmets must be worn for cycling trips.
