SUMMER traffic problems in a tourist spot could be ended if plans for a 630-space park and ride area is given permission.
North Yorkshire County Council is being recommended to approve the scheme, on the outskirts of Scarborough, despite fears it could cause flooding and congestion on other roads.
The park and ride area has been planned for Seamer Road, along the A64 York to Scarborough road.
In a report to the council, which will meet this week, assistant director of planning Stephen Smales said plans for the 24-hectare site should be welcomed.
He said: "It is seen as essential to the success of Scarborough Council's £27m integrated transport strategy."
He said that Yorkshire Water believe any potential flooding problems could be solved by surface water being drained from the site.
Irton Parish Council opposed the scheme because it believed it will affect adjoining roads. The Highways Agency has also objected to the impact of traffic on the A64 trunk road.
The site is an area of rough grazing, and Mr Smales said it had been chosen because it would cater for traffic heading to Scarborough from the south and west.
He said: "It has been through a rigorous process of examination."
The plans include a Travel Inn and restaurant.
