BRITAIN'S most successful wheelchair athlete, Tanni Grey Thompson, is to meet pupils from a Chester-le-Street school.

Students at Roseberry Sports and Community College have taken part in Sports Leader Awards, which have equipped them with the skills to organise and lead sporting activities.

On Wednesday, June 16, they will demonstrate what they have learned and how the awards have given them the confidence to lead groups.

The sports leaders will instruct Ms Grey Thompson through each session and she will be taking part alongside children from local primary schools, including Hare Law Special School.

There will be a variety of activities from ball games to rock climbing.

A British Sports Trust spokesman said: "It will be a great sight to see, watching a group of 17-year-olds lead Tanni and a large group of youngsters.

"The Sports Leaders will in turn be able to learn a great deal from Tanni as there will be plenty of time for them to ask her questions and to understand what it takes to get to the top of a sport."

A Sports Leader Award is a nationally recognised qualification and a passport to future employment or education.

Last year, more than 3,000 courses were run which trained 75,000 people.
