Bookies slashed the odds on this summer being the hottest on record yesterday as Britain basked in tropical temperatures.
On the hottest day of the year so far, the region saw temperatures hit 23C (73F), as William Hill reduced its odds on record hot weather from 20/1 to 12/1.
In the North-East and North Yorkshire, workers and visitors took the opportunity to catch some sun. And while it was hot in the North, it was even balmier in the South, which sweltered in 30C heat.
Weather forecasters said the average for this time of year is about 19C (66F).
"It is pretty uncommon weather," said a PA Weathercentre spokesman. "Early June is usually fairly cool because sea temperatures are pretty cool."
The heat is not due to last, as winds creep eastwards, bringing the threat of showers.
Things are expected to cool down over the next few days, although the region should see sunnier periods as low cloud lifts. The weekend should be dry and sunny.
