HUNDREDS of people turned out in bright sunshine at Redcar Racecourse, east Cleveland, yesterday, for the running of a race sponsored by The Northern Echo's sister paper, the East Cleveland Advertiser.
The winner of the race, which was for three-year-olds and contested over the straight seven furlongs, was Dark Day Blues, based at Middleham, near Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
The horse, owned by Mike Newbould and trained by Micky Hammond, claimed its first victory by a length and a quarter. For jockey Darren Williams, 25, it was his 27th win of the year.
The best turned out horse of the race, chosen by Sheila Argument, general manager of the East Cleveland Advertiser, was Bowling Along. The horse's groom, Elaine Mudd, was awarded £50.
Unfortunately, the horse did not take part in the race, as it proved unruly at the start.
Graham Orange, from Go Racing in Yorkshire, said: "There was a good crowd, the sun came out and it was nice and dry. Best of all we had a local winner for the local paper's race."
