A WEEK'S celebration of Herriot Country has been hailed as the most successful yet.
The third annual Herriot Happenings attracted more visitors than ever, with painting exhibitions, photographic competitions, a dog show, nature watches, children's activity days, plant fair and the annual Snail Derby at Mount Grace Priory, near Osmotherley.
A record 700 people flocked into Sutton Park stately home last weekend for a specialist plant fair, and 400 people visited a free exhibition at Shandy Hall in Coxwold.
There were also two special Herriot days out when 45 people were taken on a journey illustrating the life of vet, Alf Wight - the real James Herriot.
They had a tour of The World of James Herriot, in Thirsk, a 1940s vintage coach ride to Leeming Bar and a trip on the Wensleydale Railway, all guided by Alf's children, Jim and Rosie.
David Shields, tourism manager for Hambleton District Council, said: "This year's Happenings was bigger and better than ever before. The week is a celebration of Herriot Country but also marks the start of the summer tourist season for the attractions."
