HUNDREDS of mourners attended the funeral yesterday of a four-year-old girl who died in an accident at a farm.
Shelby Annette Tyers is believed to have died after gym equipment fell on her during a visit to Thornton Bridge Farm, Thornton Village, near Maltby, North Yorkshire, on Tuesday, June 1.
Yesterday, so many vehicles took part in the funeral cortege that a busy road had to be closed in Stockton town centre.
Police said several hundred cars and other vehicles joined the cortege from Shelby's grandmother's house, in Low Lane, Thornaby, to St Peter's Church, in Yarm Road, Stockton.
The procession was led by a horse-drawn carriage, which carried Shelby's coffin. There were also vans and trucks crammed with flowers.
Police temporarily closed Yarm Lane and Yarm Road at about 1.30pm.
"There were several hundred cars involved but the funeral was peaceful," said a police spokesman yesterday.
Shelby lived with her father, Gareth, 29, a Tarmac construction engineer, and her mother, Kelly, 27. of Newby Grove, Thornaby.
North Yorkshire Police have carried out an initial investigation and said there were no suspicious circumstances.
An inquest into the death has been opened and adjourned.
