YOUNGSTERS used to a modern day diet got a chance to try D-Day food as part of the recent commemorations.
Children at Yarm Preparatory School worked with cooks dressed up in 1940s costumes to make a D-Day meal.
The event was designed to bring home to the privately educated children the hard life of ordinary people during the Second World War. The school dining room was decorated and kitchen staff served a lunch of corned beef hash, span fritters, sausages and vegetable pie followed by suet pudding or rice pudding.
"You would be amazed how much the children enjoyed their lunch," said a school spokesman.
