DOG owners are being asked to take a pride in their environment by cleaning up after their animals.
Wear Valley District Council will be launching the Pride in Wear Valley Campaign next week to coincide with the Dogs Trust National Poop Scoop Week.
A council spokesman said: "As summer approaches, we are only too aware of the presence of dog mess in our local parks and streets as we try to enjoy precious time in the sun.
"Wear Valley District Council is aiming to tackle this problem.''
From Monday, people living in Wear Valley are invited to collect a free poop scoop and bag from the Civic Centre, Crook, Wolsingham Town Hall or Bishop Auckland Town Hall, while stocks last.
The council would also like to hear from any community group in Wear Valley who would like a dog fouling survey carried out to identify areas spoiled by dog mess or who feel enforcement officers might be needed in their area.
Information about dog fouling can be found at the three collection venues. For further details call Joanne Morley, Pride Campaign Officer, on (01388) 761617.
