There's already several cricketers staking a claim as 'Local Heroes'. Last week I mentioned the guys who had scored six sixes in one over and now I read about young Casey Shogren and his stunning bowling performances for Durham!
Casey finished his second competitive match with record figures of eight wickets for nine runs, including an impressive four wickets off four balls! I'm not the world's greatest expert on cricket but even I know that is some feat. Let's hope young Casey makes the right decision and chooses England over Australia if he ever turns professional.
Football still hasn't quite gone away yet, so well done to Hartlepool Chester Hotel who won the Darlington Charity Cup, sponsored by Darlington Building Society, by beating Tindale Crescent WMC in the final held at the Darlington RA ground. In a hard fought game, Hartlepool just managed to edge out Tindale Crescent by two goals to one but it was such a close contest that the result could have gone either way. Under the terms of the competition, Hartlepool Chester Hotel will now choose a local charity to benefit from a donation of £500 raised by the Charity Cup Committee. The Darlington Charity Cup was founded in 1908 and is one of the longest running Charity Cups in the region. This represents a clean sweep for the club. As well as being the first team from the town to win the Darlington Charity Cup, they also won the Hartlepool Church League and each of the domestic cups they entered.
Another lady rugby player is on the verge of international honours. Darlington Mowden Park's Ashleigh Wright is one of a select group of players chosen to attend an England Performance Camp. Ashleigh will work on her skills and stamina and hopefully will soon progress to full international recognition. While on the subject of rugby it would have been interesting to be a 'fly on the wall' during Chester-le-Street's recent tour of France. Undefeated, they returned home winners of the Schneider Electric Rugby Tournament and, no doubt, with a wealth of stories to tell.
Must mention the local golfers, led by ex-England rugby international Tony Underwood, who teed off on the opening day of the Headlam Hall Golf Course. Raising funds for TFM's own Make a Child Smile charity I understand the course played exceptionally well and a fine day was had by all.
We're on air on 96.6TFM with Soccer Saturday all through the summer between 12pm and 2pm for all the latest football news from the Tees Valley and, of course, TFM will have news from Portugal as England being their Euro 2004 campaign.
