FOR most people, a trip to a the Greek islands means lapping up the sun, taking it easy and recharging the batteries.
For Paul Sturdy, of Great Ayton, a seven-day visit to Naxos and its neighbouring islands will be anything but.
Every day, in temperatures that regularly top 100F, he will swim an average of 3km and walk more than 4km to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
He said: "This swimming trek sounded like a good idea at the time when my friend Brian, who is doing it too, suggested it.
"We will swim a total of 20km during the week and walk about the same distance over the islands."
Mr Sturdy leaves today and aims to raise more than £1,000 in sponsorship.
He added: "I have been training at the local baths, completing about 40 lengths per visit.
"The work that Yorkshire Cancer Research is doing is really important and I am looking forward to the challenge and to raising money for the charity.'
